Sales (Re)structuring & Selection in Leiden
Why here
In Leiden a sales process designed for quote, negotiation and signature runs aground on the phase in between. At a customer on the Bio Science Park, the road from interest to order passes through an evaluation, a validation, an approval from the technical service and sometimes a funding decision that has not been taken yet. In an ordinary CRM that reads as months of inactivity, so the deal drops out of view or sits on likely forever. We turn those steps into proper stages with their own exit criteria: what has to be finished before an evaluation becomes a request. We also split the roles. Somebody has to be the technical counterpart of a researcher or specialist; somebody else has to guard the process. On the east side of the city the mirror image applies: there the process only starts at a request for quotation, and that is too late.
No list of offices — just honesty: we work remote-first and come on-site where it truly matters, by plane if that is what it takes. Travel costs are charged on.
Our approach
Every live pursuit gets the question of which stage is genuinely in play. That produces a staging suited to long evaluations, with an exit criterion per stage tied to something testable. We describe the division between technical and commercial follow-up and set up the weekly meeting in which even long pursuits keep getting a next step.
Frequently asked questions
-
Our deals sit still for months during validation. How do you forecast that?
By tying the stage to an event rather than to a probability. While an evaluation is running the question is not how likely the order is, but when the evaluation completes and who decides afterwards. We record per stage what evidence is needed to move on and which date is known. That turns your forecast into a schedule, which is more useful than an estimate based on feel.

Who should hold the conversation: our scientist or a salesperson?
Usually both, but not simultaneously in the same role. The technical counterpart wins credibility and answers the substantive questions; the commercial owner guards the steps, the agreements and the dates. Without that second role a pursuit settles into a pleasant professional contact with no decision behind it. We set out who does what and train the handover between the two.
