Sales in Leuven

Leuven is a high-tech region where microelectronics, medtech and software sit within a few square kilometers of each other. Dcraft Of Sales builds prospecting, sales structure and closing for companies with a technical product, a long qualification cycle and customers who are usually abroad. Remote-first, and at the table on Haasrode or Arenberg when a deal calls for it. Here the challenge is rarely the product and almost always the commercial process around it.

No list of offices — just honesty: we work remote-first and come on-site where it truly matters, by plane if that is what it takes. Travel costs are charged on.

The market

Leuven's economy is built on research. Around imec and the university a cluster has grown up in semiconductor and imaging technology, medical devices and software, with Haasrode Research Park and Arenberg Science Park as its physical anchors. The companies there rarely sell to a Flemish customer: their buyers are manufacturers, hospitals or research departments in Germany, the United States or Asia, and an order only follows a technical evaluation that runs for quarters or years. The city also holds a major employer in brewing and food, plus a large healthcare and education sector. The result is a labor market full of engineers and researchers, and a structural shortage of commercial people who can hold their end of that conversation.

The sales reality here

The recurring problem in Leuven is a pipeline made of projects rather than deals. A technical company gets into conversation with a large buyer, delivers a prototype or an evaluation, then waits for months without knowing who decides internally or which budget year applies. Meanwhile that evaluation is still counted as an opportunity in the reporting. We attach a qualification model built for long cycles: who is the technical champion, who signs, which stage must be cleared, and what is the next scheduled step. A conversation that produces no next step leaves the pipeline.

Frequently asked questions

  • Our sales cycle runs eighteen months and goes through a technical evaluation. What does prospecting look like then?

Different from a short cycle: the goal of a first conversation is not a quote but a place in next year's evaluation program. We work on a longer horizon, with follow-up that adds something substantive such as a test result, a changing standard or a reference application, and with a pipeline weighted by stage. Just as important is keeping parallel contact with the engineer who runs the tests and the person who controls the budget.

  • Our customers are in Germany and the United States. Can you sell there?

We build the commercial machine that serves those markets from Leuven, and we join the conversations ourselves where that helps. What we will not do is pretend a Flemish team replaces a local German or American one: those markets need the language, the time zone and references that carry weight there. In practice we set up qualification and follow-up here, and we decide together at what point a local representative or partner returns more.

  • How do we find a salesperson who can keep up with our engineers?

By selecting differently. The Leuven labor market is full of technical talent and short on commercial talent with technical depth, so the classic hunt for an experienced account manager returns very little. We more often look at people with a technical background and a commercial instinct, and build the selling skill through training. That takes more coaching in the first year, but the conversation with a research department then actually happens on substance.
