Sales (Re)structuring & Selection in Bruges
Why here
Bruges companies ask one sales department for two things that get in each other's way. On the port side you need account planning: a limited number of parties, a decision team you map out, contract expiry dates as your grid, and years of preparation for a moment that comes once. On the city side you need volume: many smaller buyers, a short decision by the owner, and a rhythm that follows the season. Put one person on both and the fast work always wins while the port file sits untouched until it is too late. So we separate the two tracks in the process and in the calendar, with their own definition of progress each. In selection we account for something that weighs more heavily in West Flanders than elsewhere: people stay a long time here and take their relationships with them, so a hire is a long-term decision rather than filling a gap.
No list of offices — just honesty: we work remote-first and come on-site where it truly matters, by plane if that is what it takes. Travel costs are charged on.
Our approach
Two streams, and how much time actually went into each: that is how the past few years' revenue gets split, and that ratio almost always surprises. Then we fix the account-plan format for the port side and a pipeline with short stages for the SME side. In the weeks after we write two role profiles and lay out the calendar so the slow work is protected. If someone is missing, selection opens with a real calling block.
Frequently asked questions
-
Can one salesperson serve both markets?
Temporarily yes, structurally rarely. The problem is not skill but attention: a quote for a construction supplier pays off this week, an account plan for a terminal only in two years, and the second always loses. If it does have to be one person, we block fixed parts of the week for the port work and measure progress there on intermediate steps rather than on revenue.

Good salespeople are hard to find in our region. What do you advise?
Search on behaviour rather than on a CV with sector experience, because that pool runs dry here quickly. In practice the strongest candidates often come from inside sales, technical support or the shop floor: they know the product, they know the customers, and all they lack is conversational structure, which can be trained. We test them with a real calling block and an objection, so you hear beforehand whether someone keeps probing or falls back on explaining.
